The sightseeing in this section conforms to the Greater Manchester region and a little beyond.  This area shows great diversity of human and natural landscape.  The works of Man vary from stone to brick, from slate roofed terrace to thatched cottage, from towering mill to stately home.

Hit the North - days out from Manchester

A glance at a UK map shows Manchester is smack bang in the centre of the island with an excellent communication network.  The motorway system serves Manchester particularly well, with the main east-west artery, the M62, connecting Manchester to Liverpool and the cities of Yorkshire whilst the M6 links the city to north and south.

Prehistory, Romans and Castles

There are very few traces of our prehistoric brethren across the Greater Manchester region.  There were Bronze Age mines on the wonderful hill of Alderley Edge but it is difficult to say what is exactly left from that era.  The most tangible remains are the tiny remnants of a stone circle and enclosure on Turton Heights, north of Bolton, and the traces of an Iron Age hillford at Buckton Castle, on Buckton Moor, above Mossley.
